Note from the Editor
Stephen Rose
Welcome to another edition of the Insider.

What's new this month? Windows 7 was released to manufacturing!

It's important to understand that RTM is not just an important milestone for us—it's also an important milestone for our partners. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can now get their PCs ready, software development partners can test their new applications, and hardware vendors can ready their hardware. To learn more about our RTM, click here. Also, be aware that, although Microsoft Volume License customers will be able to get Windows 7 Enterprise on September 1, all other editions will be available on October 22.

There are lots of cool new interviews on www.talkingaboutwindows.com, including interviews with engineers and members of the Windows team on everything from the user experience and compatibility to DirectAccess and BitLocker. We're planning some great changes for the site as we get closer to the general availability of Windows 7, so stay tuned for updates.

Last month, we focused on helping you assess and resolve application compatibility issues for Windows 7. This month, we'd like to continue to help you assess Windows 7 for your environment—this time with migration and planning for deployment. Starting to look at how to deploy Windows 7? You've come to the right place. Check out our Windows 7 Desktop Deployment Overview. Looking for even more pilot and deployment resources? Visit the Springboard Series Windows 7 Pilot and Deployment page.

Finally, we know you're not the only one involved in assessing whether Windows 7 is right for your environment. Check out www.microsoft.com/windows/enterprise for information on cost savings and business value plus real customer stories from early adopters.

Remember all of your resources can be found in one spot at www.microsoft.com/springboard! Be sure to bookmark this invaluable reference!

Something to Blog About
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is a new command-line tool that you can use to service a Windows image or prepare a Windows PE image. Last week, Springboard Series sat down with Microsoft MVP and STEP member Justin Rodino, who provided some guidance on starting and finding basic information with DISM, and then shared a step-by-step way to change the system with the tool.

Check out the interview on the Springboard Series Blog and share your thoughts on this new tool, or discuss it on your own blog and ping us back.

Community Update
This month, we asked our MVP community and Springboard Series Technical Expert Panel (STEP) what they see as the top influencers on their decision to deploy a new operating system (OS) in their organization, and what is on their list of things to consider. The responses contained a lot of common themes so we'll be sharing a selection in this, and next month's, newsletter.

What's on your Windows 7 assessment checklist?
Aaron Tiensivu, Microsoft MVP, Windows System & Performance
"My checklist can be a bit open ended because it depends on the size of the deployment and the existing infrastructure, but the general checklist consists of many free Microsoft tools and resources, which is appreciated in the current economy:
1.
Check for the latest assessment guidance at www.microsoft.com/springboard.
2.
Take advantage of free Microsoft tools—the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit for enterprise environments or the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor for smaller environments.
3.
Identify and resolve potential application compatibility issues with the Application Compatibility Toolkit, another free Microsoft tool.
4.
Prepare or update a Microsoft Deployment Toolkit installation with potential new OS images, with the drivers, shims, and updates obtained from steps one through three."
- Aaron Tiensivu, Microsoft MVP, Windows System & Performance

What's on your checklist?
Send us an e-mail message at winpro@microsoft.com with a short list of your top considerations when assessing and deploying a new OS and we'll share some of your thoughts with the rest of our readers in next month's edition.
